While multitasking may be popular, maybe even enviable, it actually increases the chance of making mistakes, missing important cues, and lessening memory retention, resulting in decreased problem solving and creativity. How can you train your brain to focus on the task at hand?

Tame negative emotional frenzy by exercising, meditating, and sleeping well. Start team meetings on positive topics, and add a little humor to improve everyone’s brain function. That, in turn, will lead to better teamwork and problem solving.

Use the “ABC” method to keep distractions from interrupting your focus. Be Aware of your options: stop and address the distraction, or let it go. Take a deep Breath and consider your options. Then Choose to stop or go. Keep distractions out of team meetings – no laptops, tablets, or cell phones allowed!

Before starting a new task, focus on your body. Walk, stretch, deep breathe. Your brain is continuing to work on your past tasks and this mental break may even lead to new ideas. In team meetings, schedule five-minute breaks each hour for attendees to stretch, take a short walk or quietly meditate. This restores the brain’s executive function and can lead to more and better ideas when the meeting continues.
